The two I-love-yous — and which one to say
Persian splits “I love you” into two registers. Doostet daram (دوستت دارم) is built on doost — friend, beloved — and works everywhere sincere affection lives: a partner, a parent, a lifelong friend. It is the phrase you will actually use. Asheghetam (عاشقتم) is built on eshgh (عشق) — passionate love, the word the Sufi poets wore out — and it is a declaration: “I am in love with you.” The unspoken rule: doostet daram early and often; asheghetam when your heart has finished deliberating. There is also the playful escalation kheyli doostet daram — “I love you a lot” — for everything in between.

Compliments that land
Khoshgel (خوشگل) is the everyday “beautiful” — to your person, khoshgelam, “my beautiful.” Ziba (زیبا) is the elevated, poetic register — to zibayi, “you are beautiful,” sounds like a line from a ghazal. For men, khosh-tip (well-put-together, handsome) is the classic. And the compliment Persians actually give most: bá namak (بانمک) — literally “with salt” — charming, cute, magnetic. Being called salty in Persian is a very good day.
When in doubt, borrow from the poets
Persian speakers quote poetry the way others quote movies. Two lines that never fail: Rumi’s “goftam ze koja amadi? goft ze del” register — love arriving from the heart, not the road — and Hafez, whose divan sits in nearly every Persian home and gets consulted for fortunes (fal-e Hafez) on Yalda night. You do not need to memorize verses: knowing that Rumi and Hafez are love’s house poets — and asking your date to read you their favorite line — is the single most charming move available to a non-Farsi speaker. Three pronunciation tips
- The ‘gh’ (ق/غ) in eshgh and ghorbunet is a soft gargled g from the back of the throat — closer to a French r than an English g. Approximate it; you will be forgiven warmly.
- Stress usually lands late: doostet dah-RAM, asheghe-TAM.
- Say it anyway. The attempt is the gift. Expect delighted correction — which is, itself, flirting.
